I heard about Freecycle and thought that it sounded like a really great idea. I’m not a total hippie or anything but I am somewhat of a collector (not packrat thank you) and occasionally have things I would like to get rid of that aren’t trash. Freecycle is basically an online message board that links members of a community up who want to give away things to whoever might want them. I don’t recycle. I feel kind of bad about that but I live in an apartment and don’t have pickup here. I am basically too disorganized and unmotivated to do it on a consistent basis. When I signed up for Freecycle I wasn’t even thinking of what I could get out of it but more about the things that I could unload on others who might have more use for them (extra fish tank, a ton of acrylic yarn, etc.)
So the first hurdle was actually making it into the Freecycle clique. You have to sign up for a yahoo account and be approved by their moderator based on why you want to join. Then after going through that and getting my golden password I started getting flooded with emails from them. Four or five a day. So I haven’t ended up actually posting anything on there for anyone else to come get from me because it has turned into a hassle (like saving hundreds of aluminum cans to recycle combined with having to deal with strangers) and I haven’t responded to any offers. Why haven’t I jumped on any offers for free loot? Well, here are a few selections from recent Freecycle posts I have gotten. These are all actual things as they appeared in the emails that I could have responded to and gone to pick up. There are a couple of requests in there too. See what you think.
Approximately 15 multi-colored and manila file folders, having served
purpose would like to move on to new home. A craft project perhaps?
Someone less esthetically finicky than I?
hi i needed some stuff like crackers, chips, cookies, or anything dry
that consists of foods like those items.
I have about 2 bales of used bedding straw. Has chicken, duck and goat
poop, so it's great for garden beds! Not too heavy in nitrogen, but
good fertilizer & mulch. I have tools and old boxes you can pack it in.
I have six plastic Margarita glasses that would be nice around the pool
or patio.
I have of lotions ands gelssome from perfume sets.
Aveno lotion and gel
Gucci gel and I think lotion
Romance gel and lotion
Imitation Proactive from Target
I need towels and washcloths the most.
Could use some bed sheets (FULL) and pillowcases as well.
Plastic CD tower, falls easily if in busy location, but would do the
trick if pushed up against a wall or corner.
So there you have it. I get a bunch of emails offering me boxes of oatmeal, half full bottles of shampoo, and other odd things and also requests for odd and sometimes extravagant things. People ask for things like a computer. Or livestock. Occasionally there seem to be some good swaps going on. I guess maybe you have to really be into it. In the meantime it’s amusing reading as long as it’s not clogging my inbox.
