I apologize for subjecting you to the horror of that image but it's necessary. My patio is infested with aphids and I need assistance. The problem with aphids is that they are so tiny they can take hold before you realize there is an invasion going on and by then they have posts and armories throughout the garden. I thought I caught these guys pretty early on. I try not to use anything too horribly XXX toxic because the cats play out there and I am out there digging in the dirt and clipping on the plants, etc. I tried chili powder and tobacco and garlic. Nada. Just made a stinky mess. I hate using Sevin Dust because it looks so bad but I used it and it didn't work much either. I used spray for flowers and veggies and that hasn't worked but it did burn up some of my plants. So the Aphid Army remains firmly entrenched among my petunias and violas unwittingly eating themselves out of a home. And no, I can't get a box of ladybugs to eat them cause I keep the door open and then the house would be full of ladybugs which would be charming for about an hour and then lose its appeal. I would appreciate any advice.

Here's whatcha do: go out and buy a pouch of "Red Man" or "Beech Nut" chewing tobacco...place about half the pouch in a sprayer bottle...fill the bottle up with water and let the tobacco steep for a couple of days (do not remove the tobacco after steeping)...spritz your plants and that ought to kill off the aphids without harming your plants. My Grandpa used to do this for my Ma's rosebushes. You can also call around the various nurseries/greenhouses and see if they sell live ladybugs (some do)...they are a natural predator of aphids. Much luck.
