I failed with bonsai trees but I have had some limited success with little succults. Practicing the art of desert bonsai takes a lot less patience and is much more forgiving if you say, forget to water for a couple of weeks.
Ornamental lettuce has made its way into my collection this year. I may try tomatos again but this offers instant gratification and it's also pretty interesting to have a salad growing on the porch (just so long as don't start attracting deer or hobos).
